The IACP has a dedicated and focused international membership, and IACP 2012 in San Diego is a testament to how international activities continue to grow.
Colonel Nelson Werlang Garcia of the Military Police of the Federal District, Brasilia, Brazil, and IACP International Vice President, described the tremendous value of annual IACP conferences for international members.
“IACP 2012 offers a well-structured program and well-selected presentations that are specifically designed for international members,” he said. “Some topics and international presenters are particularly applicable. And for the purpose of facilitating communication, there is a portion of the program that has been selected to be translated into Spanish, French, and Portuguese.”
The conference’s value cannot be experienced remotely.
“Police practitioners and executives come in to present experiences and practices, and they are shared to anyone interested in that particular subject,” Colonel Garcia said. “This way, you benefit and take away the lessons learned from others.”
The exhibit hall and the education sessions provide “real consistent, solid updates to the attendees,” he said.
He did note the distance and the financial barriers that may make it difficult for international members to attend the annual IACP conference. To that end, Colonel Garcia described the regional conferences that the IACP presents in each of its seven international regional locations.
“The regional conferences, although smaller in format, try to bring the core and the best of policing in a given region and address subject-relevant matter of particular interest,” he said. “This is just one of the ways the IACP is reaching out to achieve one of its major goals: To promote the professional development of its members and the organizations to whom we belong.”
In closing, Colonel Garcia quoted the IACP tagline. “We are truly promoting the leaders of today, and developing the leaders of tomorrow,” he said.
