Chief Yost Zakhary Sworn in as IACP President

Yost swearing inLast night, Yost Zakhary, Woodway Chief of Police and City Manager, was sworn in as the President of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) at the 120th Annual IACP Conference and Expo.

President Yost Zakhary has vowed to focus his attention on four new initiatives during his presidency. Those initiatives include: working to reduce violence and crime on our streets; increasing partnerships between law enforcement, health professionals, and community leaders so that we have a better understanding of the mental health of our arrestees and can enhance officer response and action; and lastly the enhancement of the important work done by the IACP’s Center for Officer Safety and Wellness.

In addition to these four new initiatives, President Zakhary will continue to focus on two important areas that he started prior to his tenure, the prevention of officer suicide and human trafficking.

Chief Zakhary started his law enforcement career with the City of Woodway, Texas in 1979.  He began as a dispatcher and proceeded to work his way up the ranks as a police officer, supervisor, and investigator. He was appointed Chief in 1985.  In 2001 he was appointed City Manager/Public Safety Director.

Chief Zakhary is an active participant in many law enforcement related positions and offices.  In October of 2009 he was elected to serve as 4th Vice President of the IACP and prior to assuming the presidency he had oversight responsibilities for the IACP Forensics Committee, IACP Arson and Explosives Committee, IACP Firearms Committee, IACP Patrol and Tactical Committee, IACP Police Image and Ethics Committee, IACP Aviation Committee and IACP Psychological Services Committee.  He served as General Chair for State Association Chiefs of Police (SACOP) from 2006-2008.  He has also served on the Training and Education Committee, Elections Commission, and Resolutions Committee.  Chief Zakhary has served as president of the Texas Police Chief’s Association and Chair of the Texas Police Chief’s Foundation.  In 2008, Chief Zakhary was appointed to serve on the IACP Executive Committee representing cities fewer than 10,000 populations.

The IACP is thrilled to be under President’s Yost Zakhary’s leadership for the next year. His years of law enforcement experience and leadership in the IACP will be extremely valuable.
